WASHINGTON, DC ― TCG is excited to announce today that the company has been named a Certified Benefit Corporation by the non-profit organization, B Lab. To obtain Certified Benefit Corporation status, companies must meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
A Benefit Corporation’s mission includes producing positive outcomes for the public rather than revenue-based goals or shareholder profits. Unlike traditional corporations, B Corporations are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their stakeholders (e.g., workers, suppliers, community, consumers, and the environment) as well as revenue. NPR provides a good analogy for it: “Think of it this way: the USDA certifies organic foods, and Good Housekeeping puts its seal of approval on quality products, like washing machines and skillets….B Lab has been certifying corporations it deems to be concerned about their communities and the environment.”
This is reflective of TCG’s mission to improve the world around us in big and little ways every day, and our Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal that TCG will be a top 100 company for doing good and being good, while doing well, by 2030.
“Legally becoming a B Corporation is simple ― it requires changes to the articles of incorporation and publishing an annual report. But becoming a Certified Benefit Corporation is immensely difficult, with an audit that would make the IRS proud,” noted Dan Turner, President of TCG. The company was judged on over 100 criteria, each of which required verifiable proof for evaluators to assess. From start to finish, the process took over two years and involved senior leadership at every turn. Mr. Turner personally oversaw the process.
“As we worked on this project, we found a lot of things to make us proud,” said Mr. Turner. “We also found things we need to do better. We’re inspired to be better and do better now that we know better! The B Corp focus gives us a set of goals toward being an even better corporation for our employees, our community, and the world.”
B Labs evaluated TCG on volunteer service policies, healthcare offerings, diversity and inclusion training, energy and water use, and numerous other social responsibility and sustainability factors. More information about what TCG is doing to benefit the public can be found in the company’s 2018 Annual Benefit Report.
